The World Consumer Rights Day documented on the Consumers International website since 2003 is an annual occasion for celebration and solidarity within the international consumer movement. It is a time for promoting the basic rights of all consumers, for demanding that those rights are respected and protected, and for protesting the market abuses and social injustices which undermine them. World Consumer Rights Day was first observed on 15 March 1983, and has since become an important occasion for mobilising citizen action. This year, 2010, on 15 March 2010, the discussions will be focussed on financial services: Our money, our rights.
Along side the efforts surrounding this Day each year, Consumers International organise global conferences. In their 2007 Congress, Credit and Debt was a separate topic already, so we expect the 2011 Congress to be held in Hong-Kong China on 3-6 May 2011 to also cover financial services. The Global coalition for responsible credit and fair finance will try and contribute to and promote this world-wide event next year.

What is World Consumer Rights Day
World Consumer Rights Day (WCRD) is an annual occasion for celebration and solidarity within the international consumer movement. First observed in 1983, WCRD has since become an important occasion for mobilising citizen action every year on 15 March. This year's theme is ‘Our money, our rights’ and will highlight consumer issues in relation to financial services.
Access to stable, secure and fair financial services is important for consumers everywhere, not least in the context of the global financial crisis. Consumer organisations around the world support and promote consumer rights in the financial services sector with a variety of activities.
Consumers International (CI) is working with our members to build an international picture of these experiences, so watch this space for updates and interesting tidbits from accross the global consumer movement in the run up to 15 March 2010!
